The treatment is performed through a series of injections at our office. Once the treatment is complete, many patients experience lasting relief from allergy symptoms and are less dependent on allergy medication.

How Allergy Shots Work

Allergy shots are injections that contain a small amount of your unique allergen. This could be pollen, dust, pet dander, or other environmental allergens. Your provider will inject your arm with the allergy shot once or twice a week during the treatment. As the treatment progresses, the amount of the allergen in the shot will gradually increase. Patients will continue this process for several months. After this time, the number of injections will decrease, and they will be spaced further apart. Eventually, patients will just receive a maintenance injection once a month.

As you move through the treatment, you should experience a reduction in your allergy symptoms. By the end of the treatment, most patients find that their symptoms have decreased significantly or are no longer present.

Allergens Addressed by Allergy Shots

Allergy shots are most commonly used for environmental allergies. They can not treat other allergies, such as allergies to food or medication. Some allergens that can be used for allergy shots include:

  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Dust mites
  • Mold
  • Bee venom

Who is a Candidate for Allergy Shots?

Our providers will determine candidates for allergy shots after an initial visit. When you visit Florida ENT Associates, you will meet with one of our allergy specialists and review your allergy symptoms. After this, they will determine if you are a candidate or recommend another course of treatment.

Ideal candidates have chronic allergies whose symptoms last for three months or more each year. This treatment can benefit those with specific environmental allergies and is not for those with allergies to food, medication, or other forms of allergies. Candidacy is also dependent on the patient’s commitment to the treatment. Treatment will require numerous visits for several months and should be completed to achieve the best results.

Your Treatment

Your allergy shot treatment will begin with injections once or twice a week for several weeks. During this time, your tolerance will begin to increase, and your provider will increase your dosage. As you move through the treatment, you will require injections less frequently, and they will occur every 2-4 weeks instead of once or twice a week. Eventually, you will be in the maintenance phase and only require one monthly injection. Your allergy symptoms will continue to improve throughout the process and may even be eradicated. Patients may experience side effects at the injection site, including redness and swelling.

Allergy Shots FAQ

Are allergy shots safe?

Yes. After your first injection, you will be closely monitored to ensure you do not have any severe allergic reactions. Our staff will monitor you after each injection to ensure you remain safe.

Can I just receive one dose of the treatment?

Patients should complete the entire course of treatment to see the best possible results. Some patients will experience a bit of relief after the first few injections, but it will require more to create a lasting tolerance.

With 5 convenient locations across Florida, we’re never far away.
