Our ENT specialists perform allergy testing to help find items that trigger an allergic response from the body. We perform allergy testing by testing the blood or using the skin prick method. These tests can be performed at any of our five office locations.

Allergy Testing Methods

Florida ENT Associates offers two forms of allergy testing, the skin prick or a blood test. Most patients use the skin prick method as it is easier, faster, and more affordable. The results can also be more reliable than other testing methods. Blood tests are best for patients with sensitive skin who cannot undergo a skin test.

Skin Tests

During a skin test, a small amount of each potential allergen is placed on or beneath the skin. A small reaction will develop on the skin if the test is positive.

Blood Tests

Blood tests can detect allergy-related antibodies within the blood. The test is performed by drawing a small amount of blood and sending the sample to a lab. There, the technicians will look for the antibodies to find potential allergens.

Who Is a Candidate for Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing candidates are those with chronic allergy symptoms, including skin rashes or hives, runny nose, nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, or watery eyes. When you visit one of our providers, they will determine if you are a candidate for allergy testing and which testing method will work best for you. If you are not a candidate, they can also recommend other forms of treatment.

Benefits of Allergy Testing

Allergy testing offers a comprehensive guide to the environmental factors that may cause an allergic reaction. These tests can lead patients to find items they were unknowingly allergic to or confirm a suspected allergy. This can help ensure patients remain safe and avoid things that may cause allergic reactions.

Your Allergy Testing Experience

When you visit Florida ENT Associates for testing, our providers will take the following steps.

  • First, they will clean your upper arm to prepare for testing.
  • Then, small amounts of the potential allergen will be placed on the skin.
  • Next, our provider will prick the skin with a needle, which allows the allergen to move beneath the skin’s surface. In some cases, an injection of the allergen will be placed directly into the skin.
  • Finally, you will be asked to wait 15 minutes to see if a reaction develops. If you are allergic to the allergen, the skin will turn red or begin to itch.

A small amount of blood will be taken at our office during blood allergy testing and then sent to a lab for examination. The lab technicians will be looking for allergy-related antibodies in the blood.
