Who Can Benefit from a Hearing Test?

A hearing test can be beneficial for those experiencing any degree of hearing loss. This evaluation is the first step in finding a treatment to improve your hearing and is most beneficial when done as early as possible. Hearing loss is one of the most common health conditions that affect adults today and can impact your physical and emotional well-being.

Recent studies have shown that improving one’s hearing can also increase self-esteem and improve social relationships. In order to find the best hearing loss treatment, our providers will first perform a hearing test. Our board-certified audiologists perform these tests at one of our five Central Florida locations.

Who Should Receive a Hearing Test?

Below is a list of common questions to determine if a hearing test may be necessary. If you answer “yes” to any of the questions, you should visit an audiologist for a hearing test. We provide a variety of tests designed to accurately determine any physical or cognitive factors that impact your hearing.

How do I Know if I Need a Hearing Evaluation?

  • Do you often ask people to repeat themselves when speaking to you?
  • Do you find people often mumble, making it difficult for you to understand them?
  • Do you have problems understanding certain higher-pitched voices or sounds?
  • Do you have difficulty following conversations while riding in a car or in other situations with background noise?
  • Do you find yourself turning up the volume on the TV, radio, or computer?
  • Do you find it challenging to follow a conversation in crowded rooms?
  • Do you want (or need) to sit closer to the front in church, theaters, or auditoriums?
  • Do you sometimes discover that you have raised your speaking voice during regular conversation and seem to be nearly shouting?

What to Expect During Your Appointment

During your hearing test, there will be three areas assessed. These are frequency and speech sensitivity, middle ear function, and word recognition.

An audiologist assesses your hearing to determine the form and degree of hearing loss. The test uses a machine to play specific sounds, and you will be asked to respond when you hear one. The sounds will vary in frequency and pitch to find the softest level you can hear.

What Types of Tests are Offered?

We offer several kinds, including:

  • Tympanometry and reflex test to measure how well the eardrum and middle ear system are working.
  • Otoacoustic emissions testing (OAE) to evaluate the cochlear function.
  • Pediatric hearing assessments designed for infants and children.
  • Auditory brainstem response testing (ABR) is used to determine hearing abilities, often used in newborns and infants.
  • Electronystagmography (ENG) is used for assessing balance and equilibrium.
