Understanding Sinus Issues

The sinuses are hollow passageways lined with mucus that surround your eyes and nose. They help to filter air as it passes through your nose and moves down to your lungs. When the mucus in your sinuses can’t properly drain, the obstruction can lead to an infection and chronic discomfort.

Diagnosing Your Condition with In-Office CT Imaging

For efficient diagnostics and your convenience, The Barranco Clinic offers in-office CT imaging. These images allow our doctors to thoroughly evaluate obstructions in your sinuses and create an individualized treatment plan. We often perform CT imaging if you’re struggling with chronic sinus infections or nasal obstruction. We may also perform this test to provide a precise road map to use during nasal surgery.

Balloon Sinuplasty

If you have recurrent sinus infections and breathing challenges that haven’t responded to conservative treatments, you may be a candidate for balloon sinuplasty. The procedure involves zero incisions, so there’s no scarring. During surgery, we will insert a small balloon through your nostrils, inflating it to increase space in the nasal passageways. Once we’ve enlarged your airway, we’ll deflate and extract the balloon from your nose.

Chronic Sinusitis Surgery

If you’re experiencing chronic sinusitis that’s taking a toll on your peace of mind and well-being, and your condition doesn’t respond to medication, we may recommend surgery. These procedures are performed endoscopically, using a tiny camera that gives your doctor a clear view of your sinuses. We use specialized tools to gently remove any tissue and polyps that are blocking your sinuses. After the procedure, your nose should begin to drain normally and your sinusitis symptoms should dissipate.

Septoplasty (Deviated Septum Surgery)

If your deviated septum is causing breathing challenges, headaches, snoring, poor sleep, and more, our providers may recommend a septoplasty. During the procedure, your surgeon will straighten your septum, reposition the nasal cartilage, and reshape any tissues that are contributing to your challenges. The incisions for septoplasty are placed entirely inside the nostrils, so there won’t be any visible scarring.

Nasal Turbinate Reduction

The turbinates filter air as it enters your nostrils. When they swell, it can cause breathing challenges, chronic infections, and more. In these cases, a turbinate reduction can deliver profound symptom relief and a renewed quality of life. Our surgeons can reduce the turbinates in one of two ways:

Cauterization, Coblation, and Radiofrequency

During this procedure, we reduce the turbinates without changing your bone or tissues. We’ll use a specialized device to warm the turbinates with waves of concentrated energy. This process forms scar tissue, which shrinks the turbinates. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia and takes just 30 minutes to complete.

Surgery

In some cases, we may need to reduce your turbinates with surgery. Using general anesthesia, we will remove a portion of the bone underneath the turbinates, which shrinks them. During surgery, we can also remove some of the surrounding tissues to further open your air passageways.

Next-Generation Solutions for Sinus Problems

In addition to traditional surgery, there are many minimally invasive approaches available to relieve painful symptoms.

VivAer

VivAer is a minimally invasive treatment that gently opens and remodels the nasal airways using radiofrequency (RF) energy.

It can help you breathe easier, and it requires no incisions or downtime.

ClariFix

ClariFix is a clinically proven, minimally invasive treatment for chronic rhinitis and sinusitis symptoms.

It uses cold therapy to target the nerves that are causing your symptoms, relieving inflammation, pain, and more.

RhinAer

RhinAer sends RF energy to the nerves that signal the nose to run, swell, itch, and more.

By precisely targeting these nerves, this minimally invasive treatment delivers lasting relief from chronic rhinitis symptoms.
