Thyroid masses can manifest as a result of a cyst, overgrown thyroid tissue, iodine deficiency, or more rarely, cancer. Our highly experienced and compassionate ENT specialists at Florida ENT Associates can help determine the exact cause of your thyroid masses and craft a personalized treatment plan to help you regain your health and well-being.

Treatment for a Thyroid Mass

Our ENT doctors will perform testing and evaluation to find the root causes of your thyroid mass and determine if it is cancerous or not. If the mass is not showing signs of growth and it is not cancerous, it may be possible for the patient to just “wait and see.”

In other cases, hormone therapy, medications, or surgery may be required to reverse the condition. If the mass interferes with swallowing or breathing, it will need to be operated on.

About Thyroid Masses

Thyroid masses may run in the family, or they may form as a result of iodine deficiency. While any type of mass can be disconcerting, it is very rare that the underlying cause is cancer, with less than 5% of patients being diagnosed with the disease. The following is a list of different types of thyroid masses:

  • Colloid nodules – Nodules are non-cancerous growths related to the thyroid tissue.
  • Thyroid cysts – Cysts are small fluid-filled growths.
Inflammatory nodules – Over time, inflammation in the thyroid gland can lead to pain and discomfort.
  • Thyroid cancer – Cancer is typically present in less than 5% of cases.
