A mass is an abnormal growth that can potentially cause many health issues. Occasionally, a mass will develop on the thyroid gland found in the front of the neck. The thyroid, a component of the endocrine system, regulates body temperature, heart function, and digestion.

Treatment for a Thyroid Mass

Our ENT doctors will perform testing and evaluation to find the root causes of your thyroid mass and determine if it is cancerous or not. If the mass is not showing signs of growth and it is not cancerous, it may be possible for the patient to just “wait and see.”

In other cases, hormone therapy, medications, or surgery may be required to reverse the condition. If the mass interferes with swallowing or breathing, it will need to be operated on.

About Thyroid Masses

Thyroid masses may run in the family, or they may form as a result of iodine deficiency. While any type of mass can be disconcerting, it is very rare that the underlying cause is cancer, with less than 5% of patients being diagnosed with the disease. The following is a list of different types of thyroid masses:

Colloid nodules – Nodules are non-cancerous growths related to the thyroid tissue.
Thyroid cysts – Cysts are small fluid-filled growths.
Inflammatory nodules – Over time, inflammation in the thyroid gland can lead to pain and discomfort.
Thyroid cancer – Cancer is typically present in less than 5% of cases.

Thyroid masses develop most commonly in those with iodine deficiency or inflammation in the thyroid. Some clients will have a history of thyroid masses in their families.

How will I know if I have a thyroid mass?

Symptoms of a thyroid mass can include changes in your voice, dysphagia, breathing problems, and pain and discomfort in the neck. Sometimes it may be possible to see the mass directly with your own eyes.

What is the risk of thyroid masses being cancerous?
