What is VivAer?

The VivAer device, a small, narrow, hand-held stylus, is used to gently open and remodel the nasal airways with radiofrequency energy. Once the device is carefully inserted into the nose, it emits RF energy to open the nasal pathways, minimize swelling and inflammation, and reduce nasal obstruction.

What is nasal obstruction?

Nasal obstruction is the enlargement or inflammation of the structures within the nose. Within the nasal passage is the nasal valve, which consists of three intricate parts:

Septum: The section of bone and tissue between the nostrils.
Turbinates: The internal tissues that warm, humidify, and direct inhaled air.
Lateral Wall: Side tissues that form the outer walls of the nose.

When any of these structures become enlarged or inflamed, nasal airway obstruction is caused. Airflow is reduced, limiting the passage of air into the body. This is experienced as congestion, difficulty breathing, loud snoring, and other difficulties.

What should I expect during the VivAer treatment?

We will start with a local anesthetic to numb the inside of your nose. When the anesthetic takes effect, we will carefully insert the VivAer device into your nostrils, one at a time. While inside your nose, the device will deliver controlled, low-temperature radiofrequency energy into the nasal valves. This shrinks swollen, inflamed turbinates and reduces inflammation. The tip of the stylus is used to gently reshape the tissues to create more room inside your nose in order to allow more air to flow inward.

Expect your treatment to last for about 15 minutes. You’ll feel a bit of pressure and possibly some discomfort during your treatment, but the procedure is not described as painful for patients.

Recovery and results after treatment

After your VivAer treatment, you will experience mild congestion for about one week. There will be some discomfort and crusting of the treatment sites for a couple of days, but you can return to your usual activities or work immediately after your treatment.
