Our experienced, knowledgeable ENT specialists at Florida ENT Associates can provide diagnostic testing for the symptoms of sleep apnea and find the best solution for your unique breathing concerns.

Procedure Overview

Sleep apnea testing is the first step in your multistage treatment plan. A sleep study, or polysomnogram, records your muscle activity and brain signals at night. You will be connected to a special device via electrodes attached to your face and head. Once we receive the test results, we will be able to attribute your sleep disturbances to either sleep apnea or another underlying ENT disorder, at which point we can create a personalized solution for your symptoms.

“The office staff is great and went out of their way to help. I have dealt with my fair share of bad offices, but these guys are great.”

Benefits of Sleep Apnea Treatment

Without treatment, sleep apnea may be dangerous, as the sleeper’s breathing starts and stops at night, intermittently cutting off the oxygen supply to the brain and body. Sleep testing can be invaluable in determining the precise cause of your sleeping issues. Once treated, sufferers of sleep apnea can rest easier. Their partners’ sleep may also improve as a side benefit.

Sleep Conditions Treated

Sleep testing can diagnose a wide range of issues in addition to pinpointing sleep apnea. People who snore will benefit from examination to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be causing problems.

Who is a Candidate?

Almost anyone who is currently struggling with sleep apnea, snoring, or insomnia will be an excellent candidate for sleep testing. We will meet with you for an initial evaluation to record your sleep habits and determine if you are a good candidate for sleep apnea therapy. Patients should have positive, realistic expectations for their testing and their treatment.

What to Expect During the Evaluation Process

Prior to sleep testing, our ENT professionals will assess whether the test is ideal for your situation and if it is, they will gather your vitals and personal information. Sleep testing can be performed at the office or at home.

If you undergo the test at one of our locations, you are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows, and other items that will help you to sleep normally, as the whole point is to recreate your home environment.

In either case, the electrodes will be attached to your face and scalp before you doze off. While you sleep, our computer will obtain data that will help us to properly diagnose your concerns. Once the sleep test is over, you’ll be able to resume your regular activities while we analyze your outcome.

FAQ

What are the negative effects of sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea disrupts the normal sleep cycle, which over time can lead to exhaustion and fatigue, memory problems, concentration difficulties, anxiety, and depression. Sleep deprivation can also increase the risk of car accidents.

How long does a sleep study take?

Sleep studies generally take 9-10 hours to complete from beginning to end. This is factoring in some time, in the beginning, to discuss the test with your administrator and to attach the apparatus.
